re:publica 18: How To Fight Conspiracy Theories – Richard Gutjahr and Lenny Pozner (extended)

republica - HONR Network

Let’s give people a free-to-use tool to publish whatever they want, whenever they want, to an audience worldwide in real-time. What could possibly go wrong? In this extended conversation, Richard Gutjahr talks to Lenny Pozner, founder of honr.com, how he became a target of conspiracy theorists and what he learned in his five-year fight against Google, YouTube, and the so-called hoaxers.

Sandy Hook Father Fights Conspiracy Theories That Emerge After Mass Shootings

Sandy Hook HONR Network

An unsettling pattern has emerged in the aftermath of national tragedies, like the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Survivors and victims’ families are grieving the loss of their loved ones but these days, they are also the targets of a wave of vitriol aimed directly at them.

They are often harassed online and in person by conspiracy theorists who think the whole thing was a hoax.

Take the March arrest of two people outside of the Sutherland Springs, Texas, church where 26 people were murdered in 2017. The pair confronted the church pastor, whose daughter was killed, saying the murders never happened and his daughter never lived. They called him a “crisis actor.”

This type of incident isn’t isolated to Sutherland Springs or to the two people arrested, either.

So, first, KJZZ turned to Joseph Uscinski, a political science associate professor at the University of Miami who studies conspiracy theories, to find out what his data says about these people and why they believe what they do.

No one knows the pain this type of harassment can wield on a grieving family more than Lenny Pozner. His son Noah was the youngest child murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012. Since that day he has had to deal with, deflect, outmaneuver and confront what he calls “hoaxers.” These are people set on revealing that he is part of a vast conspiracy from the government.

To combat this, Pozner started the HONR Network to raise awareness of this type of harassment for other families of victims.

Woman charged with threatening Sandy Hook victim’s family

Sandy Hook Hoax

Florida woman has been charged with making death threats against the parent of a child who died in the Sandy Hook school shooting massacre because she thought the attack was a hoax, federal authorities announced on Wednesday.

Lucy Richards, 57, of Tampa was arrested Monday after a grand jury indictment on four felony counts of transmitting threats, the US justice department said in a statement.

The threats were made 10 January, according to authorities, and included messages that said, “you gonna die, death is coming to you real soon,” and “LOOK BEHIND YOU IT IS DEATH.”

Another threat said, “there’s nothing you can do about it,” according to court documents.

The indictment said the threats were made in Palm Beach County to a person identified only by the initials “LP”. Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Schall wouldn’t say how the threats were delivered or provide more details, nor would she provide further details about why federal authorities said Richards thought the attack was a hoax.

PayPal enables crowd-sourced harassment

Harassment of crime victims is a profitable venture for the hoaxer.

They depend on payment companies like Paypal to pass along donations from their deranged audience, and to turn a blind eye to abuse.

PayPal and their competitors have shown they can do the right thing… if they know they are in the spotlight.  That’s where you come in. You can make a difference by contacting PayPal and letting them know what you think about their decision to do business with the lowest of the low. Here’s how:

Send your message to PayPal’s compliance team : aup@paypal.com

At the bottom of this page, there are e-mail addresses of currently-active hoaxers, and the website addresses where they have posted malicious content. You won’t want to visit them, but PayPal should, so include the link in your message.

Below is a template of what you can send. PayPal will want to know the facts before they can take action. So, be sure to also fill in the blanks for 1.) The offender’s email address, 2.) The kind of page they operate, 3.) The site’s name,  in addition to 4.) the URL (link) to the page where the PayPal “buy” or “donate” button appears. Then, send your message to aup@paypal.com:

Today I am asking that your company enforce its Acceptable Use Policy, dated July 1, 2015, against the account associated with [ email address ], a PayPal customer operating the [ website / blog / service / YouTube channel / etc. ] [ “Name Of Offending Service” ]. This customer’s use of PayPal violates one or more of the following provisions:

  • Section 2(f), prohibiting transactions relating to the promotion of hate, violence, racial intolerance or the financial exploitation of a crime;
  • Section 2(h), prohibiting transactions relating to transactions which infringe or violate any copyright, trademark, right of publicity or privacy or any other proprietary right under the laws of any jurisdiction; and
  • Section 3(a), prohibiting transactions which show the personal information of third parties in violation of applicable law.

In violation of these provisions, [ email address ] actively disseminates false information, which has been shown to inspire criminal activity against innocent people and further victimize the victims of violent crimes and their families. Similar examples have been documented by major news media:

In November 2015, for instance, Sandy Hook “Truther” Matthew Mills was arrested at a charity event in Connecticut after accosting the family of slain teacher Victoria Soto and yelling that the shooting never happened. Shortly thereafter, other “Truthers” began circulating the address of Victoria’s sister, Carlee, on the internet and sending her Instagram messages that accused her of being a “crisis actor.” One of the messages, directed at Carlee’s husband, read: “They’re coming after you. They know who you and your wife are. They know where you live.”

Then there’s the case of Andrew Truelove of Herndon, Virginia, a conspiracy theorist who used the “no children died” myth as a pretext to steal property from two playgrounds dedicated to Sandy Hook victims, then called their parents and accused them of faking their children’s deaths.

Similarly, a Sandy Hook “Truther” by the name of Timothy Rogalski was arrested on charges of 2nd degree harassment and disorderly conduct after making harassing phone calls to the current Sandy Hook Elementary School, where hundreds of the students who survived the 2012 shooting are now attending. Rogalski called the school multiple times to accuse them of “faking” the shooting. When asked for a name, he gave the name of the school’s principal, who was among those murdered.

This violation of PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy can be verified by visiting the page where your “donate” button appears, here:

LINK: [ link ]

While I understand the need to balance free speech rights with victims’ privacy rights, inciting harassment of crime victims is not legally protected speech, and is incompatible with PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy. I urge PayPal to reinforce this standard by removing support from this individual.

Sincerely,

[YOUR NAME]

Again, these companies can be on our side, but they need to hear your voice. Hoaxer activity is already in violation of PayPal’s Terms of Service. The company only needs to know that regular folks (their customers) are paying attention, and will not tolerate passive support of society’s lunatic fringe.

Here are more of the worst offenders on the web today. PayPal needs to hear what you think about their decision to business with these liars and predators; you can take action as above, making sure to include the hoaxer’s email address (which is tied to their PayPal account) along with the offending website’s URL:

HONR Network Status Update

HONR Network is committed to standing up in defense of victims and their families affected by incidences of mass violence.  With every tragic new incident, conspiracy theorists are renewed in their zeal to unleash torrents of abuse, harassment, defamation  and hate towards survivors and their families.  Some are driven by pure delusion that such incidences are staged hoaxes, while others simply for profit.  Whatever the reason, HONR Network is dedicated to taking necessary action, within legal parameters, to bring accountability to Abusive Hoaxers; whether social or legal.  The viciousness and cruelty visited upon those in trauma, pain, and grief by callous sociopaths cannot go unchallenged.  The legions of additional followers the slanderous rhetoric attracts to churn out even more recruits to the mass delusion, and subsequent harassment of innocents, must be abated.

HONR Network is currently undertaking the task of financially assisting Sandy Hook parent Leonard Pozner, who’s 6 year old son Noah was killed in his elementary school along with 19 of his classmates and 6 female educators, to civilly prosecute Wolfgang Halbig.

Lake County Clerk

REQUEST FOR PRODUCTION

As Mr. Pozner and his family grapple to deal with grief and moving on with life without Noah, Wolfgang Halbig spreads slanderous and defamatory propaganda against Mr. Pozner and his family, as well as that of the other Sandy Hook victims.  Mr. Halbig’s campaign of disinformation and hate speech has resulted in the escalation of harassment and death threats toward Mr. Pozner, and continues to recruit new foot soldiers to the Sandy Hook truth movement every day.  Recent history has demonstrated that some of these “truther” types are dangerous to society, and have committed a slough of crimes as a result of their mindset.

Moving into the near future, HONR Network hopes to assist in the civil prosecution of other Gun Truther and Hoaxer leaders who spread “hoaxer” propaganda, which convinces legions of weak minded conspiracy theorists that the Sandy Hook massacre was a government perpetrated hoax for the institution of gun control, and the victims and families of the Sandy Hook shooting are “crisis actors”.  American “free speech” laws impede the authorities from prosecuting the abusers, but “free speech” laws do not exempt such abusers from civil prosecution.

Civil litigation is a very costly endeavor, and requires ongoing infusions of funds to carry through to completion.  HONR Network needs the support of concerned, empathetic citizens who want to see such abusers punished for their actions.  Please consider donating to our cause, so we can be effective in our quest to combat the cruelty perpetrated against those who have lost loved ones to unspeakable tragedy.
